Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgery Fellowship in Richardson
Continue Your Specialized Medical Training with Methodist Health System
Methodist has one opening per year for a one-year HPB/Foregut fellowship program that bridges the gap between surgical oncology and transplantation. This fellowship is unique in that it focuses on a specific anatomic area (upper abdomen) and includes malignant and benign diseases of upper GI tract including:
- Pancreas
- Bile duct
- Liver
- Stomach
- Esophagus
The HPB Fellowship program is integrated to provide a thorough training in all aspects of upper GI disease, including alternative approaches for treatment, such as ERCP, EUS, and percutaneous techniques. The fellow will also graduate with a vast working oncological knowledge. Both open and advanced laparoscopic techniques are utilized in addition to the use of intraoperative ultrasound.
The fellow is expected to assume a teaching role for the residents and medical students rotating through the service. One resident rotates through the service per month; PGY1-PGY4. No chief residents rotate through the HPB service allowing for the co-existence of the fellowship and the residency programs with little impact on resident case load.
Research
Clinical research is required of the HPB surgery fellow, mostly focused on outcomes analysis and clinically relevant projects. The fellow is also expected to present at a national meeting. Ample resources are available to help assist the fellow in their scholarly inquiry.
