Dallas Sports Medicine Track Residency
Methodist Health System Family Medicine Residency Program
This Sports Medicine track is available to a maximum of two residents per year matching into our program.
The goals of the Sports Medicine track are:
- To provide the resident with the skills and knowledge needed to become competent and proficient when caring for musculoskeletal injuries in their practice
- To gain experience in procedures such as casting and splinting, joint injections and exercise stress testing
- To prepare the resident for a future sports medicine fellowship position
PGY-1
The first-year sports medicine training track includes:
- Developing core musculoskeletal knowledge, which includes examination of the knee, shoulder, foot/ankle, hip, and spine
- Assigned reading materials, video, lecture series, and examination competencies
- Developing proficiency in performing the pre-participation physical examination
- Attend musculoskeletal procedural workshops
PGY-2
The second-year sports medicine training track includes:
- A one-month sports medicine rotation including time spent with orthopaedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, and physical therapists
- Attendance at Friday night football games
- Attend a national Sports Medicine conference
- Opportunity to present cases at sports medicine meetings: the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Texas chapter of the ACSM, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
- A one-month orthopedic rotation
PGY-3
The third-year sports medicine training track includes:
- A second one-month sports medicine rotation, including time spent with orthopaedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, and physical therapists
- Participation in the sports medicine lecture series
- Team physician for High School athletics
- Injury clinic on Wednesday afternoons at Duncanville High School
- Completion of a sports medicine research project with presentation on research day
