Modified ERCP

Modified Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Modified endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – or ERCP during pregnancy – is a new technique for treating gallstones in pregnant women. Modified ERCP allows a surgeon to remove gallstones without using x-rays, which can harm the fetus.

Gallstones affect up to 5 percent of pregnant women. Without treatment, they can cause life-threatening complications for both mother and baby. Modified ERCP uses an endoscope (a long, thin, flexible tube with a light) to guide a small wire into the bile duct and remove the gallstones.

Where is the modified ERCP test performed?

Modified ERCP is done by the order of a physician.
