DFW Liver & Gut Club Puts Hepatitis C Treatment in the Spotlight
Each year, The Liver Institute at Methodist Dallas hosts the DFW Liver and Gut Club event to provide continuing medical education for attending physicians, including gastroenterologists, hepatologists, internists and physician extenders. The symposium features a didactic lecture along with a question-and-answer session which incorporates an audience response system.
The annual symposium, held on June 9th at III Forks restaurant in Dallas, was kicked off by guest speaker Dr. Paul Kwo, Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at Indiana University, who spoke on hepatitis C in special patient populations. Dr. Kwo put the spotlight on pushing the envelope on Hepatitis C treatment and the quest for virologic cure of special patient populations in the era of direct acting antivirals. His recommendations included treatment of chronic hepatitis C in advanced renal disease or dialysis, decompensated cirrhotics, co-infected patients with HIV, and post-operative liver transplant patients.
Based on attendee feedback, participants were pleased with the symposium, adding that the DFW Liver and Gut Club event provided “much needed information” and “the educational, interactive case studies were a valuable activity.” Guests also noted that the symposium was heavily attended by a wide variety of physicians and extenders. In addition, the event followed an excellent speaker format with case presentation accompanied by audio response participation as well as a physician panel discussion.
Due to the overwhelming response of the attendees, The Liver Institute at Methodist Dallas is pleased to announce it will host an additional symposium in 2015. The upcoming fall symposium will take place at III Forks restaurant in Dallas again on Thursday evening, October 8, 2015. This event will focus on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis, with a presentation by guest speaker Dr. Arun Sanyal, Director, Education Core, Center for Clinical and Translational Research at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Hepatologists, gastroenterologists, internists, oncologists, physician extenders and infectious disease practitioners are invited to join us as we review important current topics and case presentations with experts in the field of hepatology, gastroenterology and liver, kidney and pancreas transplant.
Methodist Health System is accredited by the Texas Medical Association (TMA) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
