Methodist Health System Foundation’s inaugural Eagle Society meeting was held Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at the Dallas Country Club. A crowd of 117 leaders, board members, current and retired doctors, and friends of Methodist gathered for our first “family reunion”. A cocktail reception kicked off the event followed by dinner (poached pear salad, braised short ribs and fingerling potatoes, and chocolate mousse cake) and program.
Jonathan Sandys, the great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, served as keynote speaker for the event.
Sandys is an internationally renowned speaker on the life, times, and leadership of Great Britain’s wartime prime minister and the impact that he still has on the world today.
He is co-author of God and Churchill, a book that presents evidence of Churchill’s view that his life was guided and protected by divine destiny; curator of the online publication Impressions of Churchill, which displays the personal accounts of those whose lives have been impacted by Churchill; and creator of the leadership course Lead Like Churchill, which inspires others to embrace the Churchillian leadership qualities of courage, faith, and integrity that guided the British prime minister throughout his tumultuous life.
Sandys has been inspired by Churchill’s “never surrender” determination that reversed the negativity of others and empowered him to courageously keep fighting. While most know of Churchill’s leadership during World War II, many are unaware of the struggles he overcame in every stage of life. Throughout Churchill’s 50-year political career, he was ostracized by colleagues who called him a crank and rejected by many he had considered friends. With courage and faith, Churchill stood for what he believed in. With integrity, he represented the people who had elected him. Churchill’s courageous determination enabled the British to stand firm against Hitler even after France surrendered.
The example of Churchill is a legacy of success in the face of failure, and it proudly stands as a demonstration of how one man’s courageous determination, faithful leadership, and steadfast integrity in the face of defeat changed the world.
“History honours my great-grandfather as a hero, but despite
the accolade, the world today has forgotten many of the vital
lessons he taught and the prophetic warnings he shared.”
—Jonathan Sandys
