Preventing a Workout Injury

For many, a “no pain, no gain” mindset might be one they fully embrace in the gym. However, it can lead to a very inconvenient injury. With the proper knowledge and preparation, you can get the workout you need without unnecessary pain. Here are five ways you can prevent a workout injury:

1. Practice Proper Form

Your form is not only critical in sports, it can make a world of difference in your workout. Many workout injuries directly occur from poor form. The most accurate way to ensure you are performing the moves correctly is to hire a trainer.

2. Don’t Skip Your Warm-ups and Cooldowns

You’ll want to include a warm-up and cool down to every workout. A warm-up gets your body ready for the exercise ahead while a cool down gets your heart back to a reasonable rate and stretches your muscles for better strength and flexibility.

3. Think “Gradual”

A new routine or workout regimen should be eased into to allow your body to adjust to the change. Gradually increase your intensity, duration, and frequency. Your fitness abilities will slowly increase and before you know it, you’ll fully be able to challenge yourself more and more.

4. Stay Hydrated

Water provides lubrication for your joints and muscles, and without it, you will lack the energy you need to get the best workout possible. Be sure to drink a full 8-ounce glass of water about 30 minutes before the workout, 8 ounces every 10 to 20 minutes during the exercise, and another 8 ounces within 30 minutes of finishing your workout.

5. Mix-up Your Workouts

Doing the same routine each time causes strain on a specific area of the body. With a repetitive motion to one area of the body, you are more likely to end up with an overuse injury such as tendonitis or shin splints. By alternating days for running and weightlifting, you’ll give your muscles the time they need to rest.

You should have active rest days each week. Your body will need time to recover or you are more likely to end up injured.
