Hepatitis C – finding hope in clinical trials

If you ask Rich Overath about clinical trials, he’ll tell you about the one that saved his life in 2011.

Only 12 weeks into treatment, he learned that there was no sign of the deadly hepatitis C virus remaining in his body.

“It’s an unbelievable relief to be told that you’re going to be okay,” says Overath, who participated in the trial through The Liver Institute at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. “I had a feeling something positive would come from this clinical trial.”

In the past decade, The Liver Institute has seen 150 clinical trials — and hundreds of patients who have found hope and cures through them.

“As a group, we treat a large number of hepatitis C patients in the state of Texas and perhaps the largest group of patients currently on hepatitis C treatment in the DFW Metroplex,” says Abdullah Mubarak, MD, independently practicing hepatologist on the medical staff at Methodist Dallas. “For patients who have exhausted the currently available standard of care or are seeking new treatment options, clinical trials give them an excellent option.”
