What is cancer rehabilitation?
Cancer rehabilitation is like other forms of rehabilitation that happen after a serious illness or injury such as a stroke or car accident. Cancer rehab services may include appointments with and treatments recommended by medical professionals, including nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and/or speech therapists, and mental health professionals.
What are possible benefits of cancer rehabilitation?
Cancer rehabilitation professionals -- including doctors, nurses, therapists, dietitians and nutritionists – can help cancer patients cope with a wide variety of cancer and cancer treatment-related conditions and their symptoms. These might include:
- Pain
- Weakness
- Fatigue or tiredness
- Shoulder problems
- Balance and walking (gait) problems
- Memory and concentration issues
- Swallowing and speech problems
- Swelling (lymphedema)
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Insomnia
After undergoing a thorough evaluation by a physician, a multidisciplinary health care team creates a personalized cancer rehabilitation plan, with the goals of helping cancer survivors increase strength and energy, alleviate pain, improve physical functioning, achieve emotional balance and boost the immune system. Each cancer rehab team member provides his or her guidance, training, encouragement and support, for the cancer survivor’s program.
Whether you’re a newly diagnosed cancer patient or a long-time cancer survivor finished with treatment, cancer rehabilitation can help.
