da Vinci® Single-Site™ Hysterectomy in Richardson
Making Surgery Easier Than Ever Before
Methodist Richardson Medical Center now offers da Vinci® robot-assisted hysterectomy. This is excellent news for those who are considering undergoing the procedure, but don’t want to be stuck with a weeks-long recovery. Thanks to this new technology, what once required a large incision is now a minimally-invasive procedure, meaning patients experience significantly shorter operation times and faster recoveries.
Our hospital is among the first in the area to offer the da Vinci® Single-Site™ hysterectomy procedure. This means that instead of multiple incisions needing to be made, our surgeons can now perform the same operation with only one small entry site.
You may need a hysterectomy if you have:
- Excessive blood flow during your period
- Endometriosis
- Prolapse of your uterus
- A desire to have a hysterectomy
- Cancer
What Happens During This Surgery?
During a da Vinci® robot-assisted hysterectomy, a single incision is made at the belly button. From here, the da Vinci® system will be able to inserts small, precise instruments into the abdominal cavity and begin the procedure to remove the uterus.
What Will My Recovery Be Like?
As this surgery is so precise and makes only one incision, healing time for a Single-Site™ hysterectomy is greatly reduced, with some patients reporting an ability to resume normal activity in as little as two weeks. However, it’s important not to undo the progress made during the operation. You should not participate in sexual activity for at least 6 weeks, and you should limit physical activity for the first 2 weeks. It’s possible you’ll feel like walking much sooner. However, make sure you speak with your doctor first to make sure doing so won’t cause any damage.
