The Elekta Infinity Radiation System offers a technological advancement, combining 3-D imaging and flexible radiation therapies for the treatment of small tumors in complex areas including the brain, spine, lungs, prostate, and other organs.

Potential benefits to cancer patients of the Elekta Infinity:

  • Greater precision, speed, and control around tumors and treatment areas
  • Smaller treatment field around tumors reduces damage to surrounding, healthy tissue
  • Reduced side effects by limiting radiation of noncancerous tissue
  • Reduced whole-body dosage of radiation received over time
  • Shorter treatment time reduces time on the table and improves patient comfort
  • Bite-block for skull treatments eliminates the need for a surgically implanted halo

Procedures using the Elekta Infinity at Methodist Dallas:

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)

  • Allows radiation oncologists to dynamically track tumor shrinkage and movement prior to and during treatment using 3-D imaging for pinpoint accuracy
  • Using the Infinity, IGRT focuses radiation on the tumor, thereby reducing damage to surrounding tissue
  • IGRT is highly effective in treating cancers in the prostate, lungs, and abdominal area

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)

  • Treatment of patients with small, benign or malignant tumors, pituitaries, ocular melanomas, or other brain tumors
  • Procedure performed in collaboration with a neurosurgeon
  • The Infinity system uses a noninvasive bite-block, eliminating the need for patients to endure the placement of a halo throughout the treatment period. The pinpoint accuracy of treatment also avoids unnecessary radiation of the entire head.

Stereotactic body radiosurgery therapy (SBRT)

A highly effective, intense local therapy for patients with early-stage tumors of the spine, lung, liver, bone, and prostate. The procedure is particularly suited for patients who have experienced previous spine treatment, allowing the isolation of precision-targeted therapy close to the spine without unnecessary radiation to the spinal cord.
