Look what the new Charles A. Sammons Tower, dedicated to emergency, trauma, critical care, and neuroscience services, is bringing to North Texas.

More space

• The 248,000-square-foot facility expands the hospital’s emergency, trauma, surgical, and intensive care capacity. The emergency department (ED) alone has 59 total patient rooms, including five trauma rooms and four triage rooms. Rooms are specifically designed for OB-GYN; pediatrics; ear, nose, and throat; and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program.
• Patient rooms have doubled in size, better accommodating hospital staff and families.
• The eight new operating rooms (ORs) are 50 to 75 percent larger and can accommodate large surgical teams and advanced technology, such as the robotic da Vinci® Surgical System.
• The neurocritical care unit is expanding from 19 to 34 beds, while the surgical intensive care unit is expanding from 20 to 36 beds.

More speed

• A new triage system in the ED helps to direct patients quickly to the appropriate care.
• There is a separate entrance for patients whose physicians admit them directly to the ED. They will spend less time waiting, as medical records and exam rooms can be prepared in advance.
• Nearby support services, such as laboratory, imaging, and environmental services, expedite care.

More teamwork

• Patient rooms are configured to allow for better staff coverage and collaboration.
• Physician team areas are adjacent to nurses’ stations, facilitating communication.

More technology

• A dedicated CT room and two radiology rooms are located at the center of the ED, improving access to advanced imaging technology.
• Portable digital X-ray equipment allows imaging services to come to the patient.
• ORs also have optional video access to education and teaming areas.

More safety

• Both the intensive care and critical care units boast improved nurse-to-patient ratios, allowing nurses to devote more energy to their patients.
• The ED waiting room and trauma area both have negative air pressurization, limiting the spread of airborne illnesses.
• The ORs’ sterile fields surpass industry standards, enhancing infection control.

More amenities

• Patient rooms allow for natural daylight, which can promote healing.
• All patient rooms are private, with more space for visitors.
• Glass partitions throughout the units help minimize sound for patients who are resting while still allowing clinical staff to monitor patients.
• All rooms include private bathrooms, improving patient privacy and sanitation.

In order to continue our mission of service to the southern Dallas community, Methodist Dallas Medical Center is proud to add to its facility the Charles A. Sammons Trauma and Critical Care Tower, a new six-story, 248,000-square-foot tower completely dedicated to emergency and trauma care. Anticipated to open in 2014, the Charles A. Sammons Trauma and Critical Care Tower is designed to bring the most vitally needed medical services for critical care to one central area of the hospital.

$108 million Charles A. Sammons Trauma and Critical Care Tower at Methodist Dallas Medical Center breaks ground

Methodist Dallas Medical Center Emergency and Trauma Care Expansion Announcement

In August 2011, the Methodist Health System Board of Directors approved a $135 million facility expansion plan with $108 million committed to fund a unique trauma and critical care center at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

As part of the facility expansion and renovation plan, Methodist Dallas Medical Center will commit more than $108 million to expand its emergency, critical care, and surgery departments with a new six-story trauma and critical care center. The 248,000-square-foot trauma and critical care center will include 58 new emergency rooms, six trauma suites, eight surgical suites, a 36-bed critical care unit, and the ability to expand to 11 stories for future growth.

Methodist Dallas expansion and improvements are scheduled to for completion in summer 2014.
