Multidisciplinary Cancer Care

Methodist provides all patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer an opportunity to visit with several experienced specialists who will assist them with developing personalized treatment and follow-up plans. This process is named multidisciplinary shared decision making. By discussing treatment options and plans with a group of specialists prior to beginning treatment, patients can feel more confident that they have explored all of their options and had a voice in their treatment planning.

The multidisciplinary team of breast health specialists includes:

  • Surgeons
  • Medical oncologists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Reconstructive surgeons
  • Lymphedema therapists
  • Genetic counselors
  • Oncology nurse navigator
  • Dietitians

Second Opinions Are Standard

To make sure that the best treatment options are provided to you, all breast cancer patient information is reviewed during weekly breast conference. During this conference, a team of multidisciplinary specialists (that includes your treatment team) discusses all possible treatment options, as well as patient preference, to determine the best treatment options for each individual patient. Your physician and/or nurse navigator will share the results of this discussion with you, and allow for you to make changes or to keep your current plan before starting treatment.

Oncology Nurse Navigators

A team of oncology nurse navigators work directly with patients throughout breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up processes to answer questions and help coordinate care. Our Oncology Nurse Navigation program is designed to support our patients through the entire process and to provide knowledgeable advocates to help patients navigate a complex process. We want each of our patients to be active and educated about their disease and its treatment so that they can confidently participate in their treatment decisions.
